Of course these pictures only reflect a glimpse of the real story. A massive animal rescue effort was spearheaded by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Hundreds of qualified volunteers responded from all over the country and Canada to assist with the operation. As a result, thousands of animals were saved. However, many others were not as lucky as the ones pictured here.
